The Peugeot 307 got off to an auspicious start by scooping the International Car of the Year accolade in 2001, the year it was launched. Over a short space in time the range has quickly expanded from the hatchback to the SW and CC models it heralds a stylish, spacious and safe solution for those looking for either a family car, ‘load lugger’ or ‘wind in the hair’ experience. Since its introduction the 307 has sold over 240,000 vehicles in the UK (to Dec 2005) in just under 4 years.
307 is available as a three- or five-door Hatchback, Estate, SW and CC (a Coupé Cabriolet). There are four core trim level specifications on Hatchback models - Urban, S, Sport and GT; S & SE on the SW, Urban & S on the Estate and S & Sport on CC versions.
Latest models feature the new ‘family-look’ treatment with a single air intake with most models taking chrome detailing on the grille integrated within a soft bumper design to the aluminium bonnet. New and larger elliptical headlamps and fog lamps feature on most models, but all benefit from advanced multiplex wiring to increase responsiveness and functionality.
ENGINES
307 is equipped with a selection of advanced petrol and diesel engines from 1.4-litre to the high-output 180bhp 2.0-litre petrol. Renowned diesel engines can be specified and range from 90 to 136bhp.
A five-speed manual gearbox is available on most versions, while an optional four-speed “Tiptronic” auto-adaptive gearbox is available on 1.6-litre petrol S models. A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted on 2.0-litre HDi 136 models in Hatchback GT, SW SE and CC Sport.
SUSPENSION
All 307s have inverted McPherson type front struts with triangulated lower wishbones and a linked anti roll bar. At the rear a deformable U shape cross member located by two rear suspension arms and a rear anti roll bar is used.
TECHNOLOGY
The S, Sport and GT models can be specified with Peugeot’s RT3 telematics system and can be specified with either a black and white display or a 7” colour screen with cartographic display.
OUTSTANDING SAFETY FEATURES
The Peugeot 307 received a four star rating in the Euro NCAP safety classification. All models have six airbags as standard. Two front SMART airbags, two front side airbags and two curtain airbags (not CC which features two side head/chest airbags and an automatic rear roll-over protection system).
Active front seat headrests are fitted to all models to help prevent whiplash injuries and three point safety belts are available for all passengers. All seatbelts have force limiters (except in the rear middle seat position) and there are Isofix child-seat mounting points on the rear seats.
Active safety features include anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). Once Brake Assist is activated, hazard warning lights automatically come on to warn following traffic. ESP (Electronic Stability Programme and traction control is standard on all 2.0-litre petrol and 2.0 HDi 136 models.

The 307 SW is a relatively new type of car - combining practicality with originality, its most distinctive feature being the three-quarter length panoramic glass roof.
With an overall length of 4,420mm, the SW is only 220mm longer than the hatchback but can seat up to seven people and luggage. The rear overhang is 120mm longer than the hatchback to give the SW its unique appearance, and is also 10mm wider.
The glass roof covers 1.33 square metres, from the top of the windscreen to just above the third row of seats. A sequentially-sliding electric blind allows occupants to control just how much light to let in through the roof, whilst a manual or automatic climate control system ensures the cabin temperature is kept cool even on the hottest of days. The SW comes with five seats as standard, with two additional rear seats available as an optional extra.
With its spaciousness a key selling point, there are a multitude of storage areas within the car, including under-seat drawers, large door bins and aviation style tables on the back of the two front seats. With the full length roof rails, owners can carry a further 100kg of cycles, skis, surfboards or luggage.

The 307 Estate is aimed at the ‘traditional’ estate buyer and is able to seat five people in comfort with a considerable load space ranging from 562 to 1805 litres when the rear seats are folded. Standard equipment across the range includes: storage boxes in the boot and large boot net, black roof rails and a concertina style luggage cover.
Two models are available in the 307 Estate range - the Urban is a well-specified entry-model and the S model adds; ABS, EBFD, Emergency braking assistance, driver and front passenger SMART airbags, front side airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, storage trays under the front seats, external temperature gauge, deadlocks, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, remote central locking, split folding rear seats, trip computer, one touch electric front windows, radio / CD player, full body coloured exterior, air-conditioning and 15” alloy wheels (or 16” on HDi 110 versions).
Estate versions can be specified with the 1.6-litre petrol or the 90 and 110bhp acclaimed HDi diesel engines.
A genuine four seater Coupé Cabriolet, the CC offers an electrically retractable roof. At the touch of a button, the Coupé turns into an authentic and elegant cabriolet. The rigid roof and the long curved glass rear windscreen retract into the boot in an innovative and entirely automatic process within 25 seconds - and can even be carried out while driving at speeds of up to 6 mph.
Based on a strengthened 307 hatchback platform, it retains the same wheelbase, with the only difference being the rear overhang which is longer by 14cm (extending the overall length to 4.34m) and a reduced windscreen rake angle (by 2.5 degrees).
There are three petrol versions available: a 110bhp 1.6-litre, a 140bhp 2.0-litre or 180bhp 2.0-litre engine which features a variable valve timing system (VVT) as featured on the 206 GTi 180. The high-torque HDi 136 diesel engine further extends the appeal of the CC.
Specification
Both models have a high level of standard equipment including alloy wheels and air conditioning with a temperature controlled glove box, as well as other standard items from the 307 range. CC models are available in either S or Sport trim specification. Sport models specifically feature; 17” alloy wheels, leather upholstery, cruise control with speed limiter and aluminium pedals.
