Since its original UK launch in 2000, Peugeot’s flagship model - the 607 - has won many loyal customers who appreciate the premium levels of refinement and equipment, whilst also enjoying outstanding value for money.
154,000 models have been produced (to the end of August 2006), and in the UK, since its launch in October 2000, 7409 607s have been sold (end of September 2006).
The stylish looks of the 607 have always been one of its key qualities, alongside modern engineering and technology. In November 2004, the 607 was restyled and further improvements to the standard equipment levels were introduced, making the choice of exterior colour the only option.
The 607 HDi 170 is available in only one trim level - Executive - but with a very comprehensive standard specification including:

The 2.2 litre HDi DPFS (Diesel Particulate Filter System) engine is the fourth engine produced out of the co-operation between PSA Peugeot Citroën and the Ford Motor Company. It strengthens further the HDi diesel engine range developed jointly since the signing of the co-operation agreement in 1998. This engine replaces the previous Euro 3 2.2 litre HDi engine fitted to the 607 from which it is evolved. It has 4-cylinders and is fitted with a 16-valve cylinder head with twin overhead camshafts and has a capacity of 2179 cm3.The torque produced by the engine and its throttle response at low engine speeds have been the subject of particular attention; as a result, at only 1000 rpm the engine develops 150 lb ft of torque which then increases to 209 lb ft at just 1250 rpm. In addition, the engine has a very flat torque curve which provides excellent driveability at all engine speeds (with more than 265 lb ft of torque at 3000 rpm).
It produces its maximum power of 170 bhp at 4000 rpm with a maximum torque of 277 lb ft at only 1500 rpm. In other words 54% more than with the previous generation 2.2 litre HDi diesel engine at this engine speed. During the design of the engine, a number of ambitious objectives were set:
A new design of combustion chamber, third-generation common rail injection technology and increasing injection pressure to 1800 bar, combined with sequential twin parallel turbochargers, are the main technological innovations that have made it possible to achieve this technical challenge.
THE SEQUENTIAL TWIN PARALLEL TURBOCHARGERS
The use of sequential twin parallel turbochargers is a world first on a 4-cylinder diesel car. The system (patented with Honeywell Turbo Technology) consists of two identical, small-diameter turbochargers. At low engine speeds, a single turbocharger ensures engine responsiveness. It is then supported by a second turbocharger, which starts to operate in parallel between 2600 and 3200 rpm according to the applied load and atmospheric conditions. The entire range of engine speeds is therefore covered. The system is controlled entirely by the engine management electronic control unit (ECU). In addition, the low inertia and small size of the turbochargers reduces response time and improves throttle response.
PRINCIPLE
At low engine speeds a single turbo-charger provides the engine boost. The incoming air is drawn in through the air filter and through a circulation bypass control valve (A).
The air is then drawn into the turbo-charger compressor C1, which is driven directly by the exhaust gases rotating the turbine (T1).
The two control valves (B) and (C) are closed, isolating the second turbo-charger, until the engine management electronic control unit (ECU) decides the extra engine boost is required.
From approximately 2600 rpm the two control valves (B) and (C) are opened by the engine management (ECU) and the circulation bypass control valve (A) closes.
With the control valve (C) open the exhaust gases exiting the engine are now directed to the turbo-charger turbine (T1), driving the first unit and the second turbo-charger turbine (T2). With both turbines driving their respective compressors (C1 & C2) the air drawn in through the air filter is now pressurised “twice” increasing the engine’s boost pressure.
The use of this technology enhances both driveability and, in particular, ensures excellent torque availability. This enables the driver to drive at lower engine speeds, thereby reducing fuel consumption.
ECCS (EXTREME CONVENTIONAL COMBUSTION SYSTEM)
The pistons of the 2.2 litre HDi engine are equipped with an all-new design of combustion chamber (ECCS). Compared to the previous engine, the combustion chamber is characterised by a reduction in the compression ratio (16.6 compared to 18 previously) and an increased diameter (+25%). This helps to reduce the quantity of incompletely burnt fuel by reducing the proportion of fuel in contact with the cylinder walls. This is achieved by a special piston design and geometry. The pistons are manufactured from aluminium with a very high mechanical strength and thermal resistance. This results in better mixing of the air-fuel mixture, significantly improving the engine’s overall efficiency, as well as reducing combustion noise. |
THIRD-GENERATION COMMON RAIL INJECTION SYSTEM
The all-new, third-generation Bosch common rail injection system now has an injection pressure which has been increased to 1800 bar (1350 bar for the previous engine).
The higher injection pressure is controlled by new piezo-electric injectors in which each nozzle is equipped with seven apertures (instead of five previously) with a diameter of 135 microns. This allows the number of individual injections per cycle to be multiplied (potentially up to six times) and ensures meticulous uniformity of the diesel injection spray pattern. With the air/diesel mixture optimised in this way, combustion is more complete and more uniform, thereby reducing emissions at source.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
This new 2.2 litre HDi 170 engine is a worthy standard bearer in terms of environmental protection. It should be remembered that through its basic design, the diesel engine ensures excellent thermodynamic efficiency and that the fitment of an HDi direct injection system increases this performance still further.
Thanks to the very high injection pressure of the common rail system and the extremely fine spray pattern of the diesel fuel into the combustion chamber, it allows more uniform and more complete combustion and significantly reduces emissions at source.
In addition, the twin turbochargers and the exhaust gas recirculation system contribute actively to environmental protection and meet the requirements of the Euro 4 emission standard.
The combination of the new combustion chamber design, with the increased injection pressure of 1800 bar, results in a reduction of emissions of around 30% compared to the previous engine.
It is of, course, combined with the latest-generation diesel particulate filter system (DPFS) technology, which has a service interval of 120,000 miles.
ENGINE DESIGN
Compared to the previous engine, the engine’s overall height has been reduced by 4 cm. This makes the installation easier and improves particularly pedestrian impact protection by creating a larger space between the underside of the bonnet and the top of the engine. Creating this greater space under the bonnet ensures better energy absorption in the event of an impact.
The patented design of the double-wall cylinder block improves the engine’s acoustic performance by 3dB, a level which will be noticed by both the driver and passengers.
The fitment of two counter-rotating balancing shafts, design of the engine mountings and the use of a dual mass flywheel also reduces engine vibration. In addition, a quick action throttle mounted in the inlet system is actuated when the engine is returning to idle to avoid any vibration when the driver stops the car.
MAINTENANCE
A large capacity two-section oil sump allows the oil change intervals to be increased to 20,000 miles, from the previous engines 12,000 mile service intervals. Similarly, the dimensions of the drive belt and its engine accessories have been designed to be maintenance-free for the life of the vehicle.
The suspension consists of a pseudo McPherson type front strut assembly with a lower wishbone and a linked anti-roll bar and, a double wishbone multi-link assembly at the rear. Improved multi-valve shock absorbers are fitted to enhance comfort and road holding.
STEERING
Electro-hydraulic variable power steering is fitted which provides maximum assistance at low speeds; assistance is then reduced gradually as the vehicle speed increases. This provides steering which is both precise, responsive and enhances both driving pleasure and safety.
BRAKES
Braking is provided by front ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 330 mm and a thickness of 30 mm, and at the rear, non-ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 290 x 12 mm. The latest generation electronic stability programme (ESP) Bosch type 8.0, which guarantees simultaneously a high level of safety and driveability is fitted as standard. The traction control (ASR) and dynamic stability control (DSC) systems can be switched off for starting on slippery road surfaces, but automatically re-activates when the vehicle exceeds 30 mph. Emergency braking assistance (EBA), the activation of which is controlled automatically according to vehicle speed, is also a standard fitment.
The interior of the 607 is one of the most spacious in its class. Whatever the temperature outside, bi-zone digital air conditioning with climate control, an athermic (heat reflective) windscreen and tinted glass ensure a relaxed environment inside. The interior is trimmed in Astrakan black leather with aluminium detailing on the centre console. The electrically adjustable front seats make finding the ideal driving position very easy, especially as the driver’s seat adjustment can be memorised, as can the position of the rear-view door mirrors.
MOTORISED BOOT
A simple touch of the “boot” button on the remote control key fob causes the boot to open automatically in less than four seconds. This operation is controlled by an electric motor with a rotary clutch acting on the support arm of the boot and assisted by gas struts.
| The motorised control can also be activated by pressing the “0” of the “607” badge at the base of the boot panel. Automatic closing of the boot is activated by pressing a dedicated button located on the edge of the lower boot panel. For safety reasons, if any obstacle is encountered when the boot is closing, it automatically reverses the movement and in the event of a power failure, the boot can still be opened manually. |
To enable the driver to communicate safely whilst on the move, the 607 is fitted with Peugeot’s integrated RT3 Telematics system which includes a radio / single CD player, GSM mobile phone and colour satellite navigation. From a list of key words, voice commands can activate the radio / CD, dial a phone number or find a destination. Remote controls mounted on the steering column allow the system to be controlled remotely without the driver removing their hands from the steering wheel.
The 607 also has an impressive in car entertainment system consisting of a 6 disc CD auto-changer combined with a JBL HiFi system. This system uses 8 high performance speakers and is controlled by a power amplifier which provides an output of 240W of music power.
The 607 is particularly well equipped in terms of passive safety, with eight air bags as standard: driver, passenger, front and rear side and curtain. The 607 is fitted with SMART twin generator and dual volume adaptive front airbags, the pressure and volume of which is controlled by the severity of the impact.
SECURITY
Deadlocks, laminated side glass, ultrasonic alarm, rolling code transponder immobiliser and alloy wheel locking bolts all help keep the vehicle secure.
Automatic locking of the doors, boot and fuel filler cap as soon as the car reaches a speed of 6 mph, provides added peace mind for the driver and passengers. This function can be de-activated / re-activated as the driver chooses.
All Peugeot 607s first registered in the UK and purchased from a UK Peugeot Dealer benefit from a Peugeot 2-Year unlimited mileage manufacturer’s warranty and a free optional 1-Year of warranty provided by the Peugeot Dealer Network in the UK. This warranty is dependent upon the manufacturer’s recommended servicing being carried out at the time or distance intervals specified in the PEUGEOT Warranty and Maintenance Record booklet, subject to the vehicle being driven less than 60,000 miles since first registration.
