  • New 6-speed manual gearbox for the 2.2-litre HDi
  • Side air bags for the rear seats in addition to curtain air bags
  • Hands-free telephone kit using "Bluetooth®" wireless technology
  • Motorised opening and closing of the boot
  • Electrochrome-plated door mirrors;
  • New trim options

Three years after its launch, the 607, the world’s first diesel car equipped with a particulate emission filter, has just exceeded 100,000 sales, making it Europe’s most widely sold saloon in the ‘H’ segment.

Up until now, the 607 was only available with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed ‘Tiptronic’ automatic gearbox with sequential control. This summer, the 607 is further enhanced by a 6-speed gearbox on the 2.2-litre HDi version, and - throughout the 607 range - even more technological and comfort features.

A 6-SPEED GEARBOX FOR THE 2.2- LITRE DIESEL HDi

ML6C gearbox

This version is now equipped with the new 6-speed ML6C manual gearbox.

The ML6C 6-speed manual gearbox benefits from the latest developments to provide precise gear selection and fast, smooth gear changes. For this purpose, triple synchros are used on the first two gears and double on third gear. Similarly, reverse gear is entirely synchronised.

The gear selection gate is the "candelabra" type, with the position of reverse gear adjacent to that of first gear. To prevent reverse gear from being accidentally engaged, the gear lever has a release mechanism.

The clutch is hydraulically controlled which ensures a smooth operation and is self adjusting.

Dynamic Characteristics

Driving pleasure has been enhanced by improvements in both acceleration and a reduction in interior noise levels.

For example, with fifth gear featuring a lower gear ratio, the speed per 1000 rpm is now 27.47mph versus 29.24mph at 1,000 rpm, acceleration from 50 to 75 mph is now possible in 11.5 s compared to 11.8 s for the 5-speed manual gearbox.

Acceleration is unchanged for the 1,000 m standing start covered in 32.7 s, and 0-62mph in 11.5 s, although the maximum speed of 127 mph is now obtained in sixth gear.

The higher sixth gear ratio also improves driver comfort and fuel consumption. At a stable speed of 80mph, the reduction in engine speed is 350 rpm, representing a gain of 0.45 litres/100 km (6.3 mpg).

The improvement in the combined cycle is 0.1litres/100 km (2.8 mpg), giving an overall figure of 6.6 litres/100 km (42.8 mpg).

EVER MORE TECHNOLOGICAL FEATURES AND COMFORT FOR THE 607 RANGE

Coinciding with the added appeal of the 6-speed gearbox, the entire 607 range is further enhanced by a number of exciting new features:

  • side air bags for the rear seats in addition to curtain air bags;
  • a hands-free telephone kit using "Bluetooth®" wireless technology;
  • motorised opening and closing of the boot
  • electrochrome-plated door mirrors;
  • a new velour trim;

With this new equipment, the innovative 607 further enhances the Peugeot values it has embodied since its launch.

Rear side airbags

Since its launch, the 607 has featured the latest safety equipment to protect passengers in the event of impact, with:

  • Front air bags with a capacity of 60 and 90 litres, combined with pre-tensioning seat

belts with a low-calibration force limiter (450 daN)

  • Side air bags with a capacity of 11 litres to protect the chests of the front passengers
  • "Curtain" air bags with a capacity of 23 litres to protect the heads of occupants at the front and rear, which deploy in the event of side or three-quarter frontal impact.

These devices are now supplemented by rear side air bags that are activated in conjunction with the "curtain" air bags.

Without changing the functionality of the seat backs or the vehicle’s rear capacity, they protect the chests of occupants even more effectively. With a capacity of 11 litres and housed

in the sides of the rear seats, their presence is revealed only by a vertical seam optimised by special threads with different strengths and an "air bag" logo visible from outside the car.

The "Bluetooth®" hands-free kit

This innovative offer represents a genuine advance in car phone technology.

The principle of the "Bluetooth®" innovation resides in the recognition and automatic connection of a "Bluetooth®" mobile phone and the vehicle itself. This new standard allows mobile phone functions to be transferred to the vehicle by radio waves.

Without having to handle the mobile phone - you simply have to have it with you - it is possible to:

  • communicate hands-free in the vehicle: calls are heard through the speakers of the car’s radio installation, the voice being picked up by a microphone installed in the front courtesy light;
  • continue a call when getting into and out of the vehicle;
  • display information about the telephone on the car’s multifunction screen (level of reception, operator’s name, number dialled or calling, elapsed time of the call, presence of SMS or voice messages);
  • navigate through menus and regulate different functions using the controls located under the car’s steering wheel;
  • call up the contents of the phone book by voice recognition;
  • call a listed number from the phone book;
  • store the most recent incoming or outgoing calls;
  • manage call waiting.

This "Bluetooth®" hands-free kit is compatible with the latest-generation phones incorporating this technology: Nokia 6310i, 8910, 8910i, Siemens S55, Sony-Ericsson T68i.

The "Bluetooth®" hands-free kit option is supplied without a mobile telephone handset, as many customers will already have a compatible phone.

This offer demonstrates Peugeot’s desire to assist its customers with the ever more stringent regulations governing use of telephones whilst driving, as well as the ability of the marque to position itself as one of the first manufacturers to offer this innovation.

The motorised boot

The preserve of expensive luxury vehicles, motorised opening and closing of the boot makes the 607 even more convenient to use.

A simple touch of the "boot" button on the remote control key fob causes the boot to open automatically in less than four seconds. This operation is controlled by a power unit equipped with a rotary clutch acting on the support arm of the boot, assisted by gas struts.

The motorised control can also be activated by pressing the "0" of "607" at the bottom of the boot panel.

Automatic closing of the boot is actuated sequentially by pressing a dedicated, identified button located in the lower boot panel.

Opening and closing manoeuvres can be interrupted by pressing the remote control or one of the afore-mentioned buttons. Pressing again restarts the initial function.

For safety reasons, any obstacle encountered in the closing phase reverses the movement. In the opening phase, the manœuvre comes to a standstill.

The boot lid can be opened or closed manually at any time. In the event of a power failure, the boot can also be closed manually and opened in accordance with the same recovery procedure as before.

‘Intelligent’ rear view mirrors

All models in the 607 range now have rear view mirrors that fold back electrically against the body.

Following the example of the electrochrome day/night interior mirror, door mirrors now benefit from this technology which, by preventing dazzle, improves safety and convenience at night and in tunnels.

The system operates with two probes that analyse light levels at the front and at the rear. If there is a substantial difference between the two, a process of electrolysis is activated, causing an iridescent gel to rise between the two glass walls of the door mirrors; it takes only five seconds for the mirrors to darken, and even less for them to clear.

A switch on the interior mirror activates the system for all three rear view mirrors, with operation signalled by means of an indicator light. This automatic function is interrupted only if the switch is pressed again.

New trim options

The diamond and ebony ambiances associated with wood trim are now available with a new velour with structured ribbing called "Otello", which covers the central part of the seats. This gives an even more luxurious feel to the passenger compartment.

The range

The Peugeot 607 range starts from £18,500 on-the-road for the 2.0-litre petrol derivative in ‘S’ trim, rising to £29,800 on-the-road for the 3.0-litre V6 automatic in ‘SE’ trim. The new range of options and accessories are now available in UK showrooms.
