peugeot 206 sw ' a new model from coventry

Tuesday, 26 February 2002

Peugeot has introduced a sleek, spacious new addition to its successful 206 range, to be built exclusively at Peugeot’s Ryton plant in Coventry and sold worldwide.

In 2001 the 206 was the top selling retail car in the UK and the new 206 SW combines 206’s charisma, driveability and sportiness with the flexibility of extra space to provide a whole new driving concept guaranteed to appeal to a wide range of drivers and lifestyles.

Style, space and versatility

The dynamic front of the 206 SW is identical to that of its stylish ‘siblings’, the 206 hatchback and 206 Coupé Cabriolet. But it features a 19 cm rear overhang which, combined with a flat boot floor gives the 206 SW a boot area some 28% larger than that of the hatchback.

The 206 SW’s distinctive sporty lines are enhanced by wrap-around rear lights and by body-coloured door handles, door mirrors and number plate housing, with rear door handles neatly inset into the pillars.

A world first for a car of this segment, is the inclusion of a rear window that can be opened independently of the tailgate, and either manually or via the remote control key; a handy feature when your arms are full, or in a tight parking space. An ultra-strong mesh net secures even heavy loads, and a pull-out load area cover is provided, to keep valuable items concealed from prying eyes.

While front seat passengers in the 206 SW will find life very similar to that in the 206 hatchback, those sitting in the back benefit from greater headroom and visibility due to the addition of rear quarter lights. In addition, all 206 SW models feature five doors.

The 206 SW is also fitted with roof bars to carry extra loads; they can be fitted with optional transverse bars to carry up to a 75kg load.

Great driveability, high levels of safety

As befits a new member of the 206 ‘family’, the 206 SW handles beautifully, with a distinctly sporty edge to its driving characteristics.

It is available with a wide range of engines - three petrol units, the 1.1-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre, and two diesel engines - the 1.4-litre HDi * and the 2.0-litre HDi 90bhp version. All provide lively performance combined with excellent fuel economy and low emissions.

The 206 SW offers an impressive safety package including anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distributor, ‘self-thinking’ SMART driver and passenger airbags that respond according to the force of an impact, and passenger airbag deactivation switch.

Availability

The new 206 SW will be available in a wide range of eye-catching colours, including Sahara Yellow and Sapphire Blue.

The 206 SW will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and goes on sale in the UK in the summer.

* The 1.4 HDi version will follow in October.
