peugeot 206 sw ' a new dimension in driving
Thursday, 16 May 2002
The UK-built Peugeot 206 SW is now on sale. This new member of the 206 family complements the 307 SW which was launched earlier this year.
Building on the success of the 206 hatchback, the 206 SW will be built at PSA Peugeot Citroën’s Ryton car plant in Coventry alongside the 206 hatchback. PSA Peugeot Citroën has recently announced plans to increase production to meet the demand for the 206 and its SW derivative to 230,000 vehicles in 2003, up 40,000 on last year.
The Peugeot 206 hatchback is Britain’s best-selling retail car, and the introduction of the sophisticated 206 Coupé Cabriolet in January 2001 helped boost its reputation as a stylish all-rounder, and with the SW, Peugeot aims to take the 206 range yet further forward.
The 206 SW boasts the practicality of an estate with seating for up to five occupants in comfort, the ride and handling for which Peugeot is renowned, combined with the character and style of a sports hatchback.
Engines and pricing
Available with a choice of three petrol (1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 litre) and two HDi turbodiesel engines, prices for the 206 SW start at £8,995 for the 1.1, ranging to £13,695 for the 2.0 litre HDi D Turbo. The 1.4 litre HDi version will be introduced in October 2002.
The 1.1 litre develops 60 bhp at 5,500 rpm, and 70 lb ft of torque at 2,700 rpm. It has a top speed of 99.8 mph, a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 15.8 seconds and in the combined cycle offers fuel consumption of 43.5 mpg with a CO2 output of 156 g/km.
The 1.4 litre petrol engine has maximum power of 75 bhp at 5,500 rpm, with peak torque of 90 lb ft at 2,800 rpm. With a top speed of 107.4 mph and an acceleration time of 0-62 mph in 13.3 seconds, the 1.4 litre 206 SW has a combined fuel consumption of 44.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 153 g/km.
As for the 1.6 litre petrol engine, it has a maximum output of 110 bhp at 5,800 rpm with 110 lb ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Its top speed is 120.5 mph, it will reach 62 mph in 10.9 seconds from a stationary start, and it has a combined fuel consumption of
42.2 mpg and CO2 emissions of 159 g/km.
The 2.0 litre HDi produces 90 bhp at 4,000 rpm, and 154 lb ft of torque at
1,900 rpm. It has a top speed of 113.6 mph and a 0-62 mph of 11.8 seconds with a combined fuel consumption of 55.4 mpg and CO2 reading of 138 g/km.
Key differences - 206 v 206 SW
The key difference between the 206 hatchback and the SW is the extra 19.3 cm of length the 206 SW carries behind the rear wheels to provide a suitably large load area, capable of carrying up to 480 litres of luggage with the rear seats in place. It also has a rear window in the tailgate which can be opened independently, using the remote control key or manually, unique to a vehicle in this class, bringing a new level of practicality to small cars.
Distinctive features
From the A-pillar forwards the 206 SW retains the same distinctive ‘face’ as the 206 hatchback, but from the B-pillar aft, it is entirely new. Black pillars give the 206 SW
a well defined waist and black side mouldings and roof rails add style as well as practicality, with the ability of carrying up to 75 kgs of luggage.
The rear door handles are incorporated into the rear door pillars and the rear wraparound lamp clusters sweep up to a high roofline and rounded rear end which gives it a stylish, sporty look. The rear window is slightly curved and dark-tinted and sits beneath a full-length rear spoiler which incorporates the central high mounted brake light.
