peugeot 'electrifies' coventry police
Wednesday, 14 November 2001
Peugeot Motor Company has donated two electric-powered Peugeot 106s to Coventry’s Chace Avenue Police Station, to provide additional transport for officers working in the local community.
A major benefit of these electric cars is that they have no exhaust, and therefore produce no emissions. They’re also exceptionally quiet - another key environmental benefit - so as well as aiding community policing, they are doing so without adding to the City’s air and noise pollution.
The electric Peugeot 106s have a top speed of 56 mph, accelerate from 0-31 mph in
8.3 seconds and have a battery-charge range of 50 miles. The batteries can be recharged from a standard domestic 13 amp power socket, with a full recharge taking six hours, and costing just 40p off-peak, representing a considerable saving on fuel.
The officers of Chace Avenue Police Station are delighted with their new ‘green fleet’. Inspector Mark Robinson said: "The electric 106s are fabulous! They are already in daily use; our officers thoroughly enjoy driving them, and recharging is simplicity itself. And because the cars are so quiet, they have created a lot of interest in and around the local community.
"We are very grateful to Peugeot for making these cars available to us. Officers can now get out and about more quickly, and the community is benefiting as a consequence."
Robert Browett, Peugeot’s Manager, Public Affairs, said: "We already work closely with the Chace Avenue Station, because it’s in the same neighbourhood as our Stoke Aldermoor headquarters, and are delighted to make these new cars available. The electric 106 is ideal for making local house-to-house calls; it’s environmentally-friendly, can comfortably accommodate four people, and is extremely cost-effective to run."
Electric vehicles - a practical alternative
253 Peugeot electric vehicles are currently in use around the UK, demonstrating their suitability for a wide variety of everyday uses. Operated by a range of organisations, including local authorities, NHS trusts and large corporations, one of the greatest concentrations can be found in Nottinghamshire, where a fleet of 38 electric vehicles is being used to promote ‘green’ transport. The Nottinghamshire Millennium Project is a partnership between the County Council, Nottingham City Council, PowerGen and the Energy Saving Trust’s Powershift Programme.
